walkingbase replied to your photo: location change: Makati City, Metro Manila,…
“Have you couchsurfed over there at all, is there anyone who offers couches?”

I stayed with this guy my very first few nights in the Philippines. Arbie is awesome and is also a tumblr blogger. We’ve hung out since I stayed with him and he continues to amaze me.

There are a few other couches that I found being offered around the Manila area, but not many with high response rates. Quite a few of the ones being offered are from other travelers here.

I’ve spent most of the rest of my time in the Philippines so far with family. I will try to couch surf a little bit when I get to Palawan, but we’ll see… doesn’t look like there are many couches there.

thereveries asked: One day I'm gonna sell everything I own too and be a nomad. Seriously. Glad to see that there are plenty of wanderlusts out there too. Pretty surprised to see your current city! Hope u enjoy your first destination, will stay updated with your travels.. I'm gonna need all the tips haha. Ingat!

That’s awesome =) Travel has been eye opening and liberating for me. This was definitely the right choice for me to make at this point in my life.

I’m loving the Philippines so far! =) I’ll be posting a lot more tips soon here. Mostly trying to post stuff that I haven’t read elsewhere.

interestingly-disinterested asked: I saw you like my post about the stupidity of our congressmen. I'm so ashamed of them right now. :|

yeah, it’s pretty sad. Don’t worry, I don’t judge all filipinos based on them ;) Planking is certainly an interesting choice of things to deal with at the moment.

Politicians in the US do things equally as dumb. You’re not alone =)

bayamontate asked: One of the saddest things about the Unites States is the lack of street food. Whenever I travel I make it a point to enjoy as much street food as possible. One of the gems of travel is to try different foods. Wash the meal down with a beer I hope?

so far, rarely with a beer - I drink too much at night! haha =) I’m visiting a lot of family here and a lot before I came… they all drink a lot more than I do, so I end up drinking a lot more than I usually do already. The street food here so far is great though!

And yeah, I haven’t had a ton of luck with street food in the US. There is a lot in Austin, TX, where I lived before I came here, but elsewhere it’s not always easy to find.. even in places you would expect to find tons of really good stuff like New York City, sometimes it’s pretty sparse.

bunnywithawhy asked: Today in my Sociology class we discussed culture shock. I'm thinking of you.

=)

It’s worn off for the most part.. At least the shocking-omfg-what-am-i-doing-here feeling. I still see things that are interesting though. Today I was sitting with some friends outside a cafe, eating and there were a bunch of street kids (maybe 5-10) across the street. They all came over and bothered us for awhile for money.
I watched them harass other people walking by. One guy gave them money, but I guess they thought it wasn’t enough, so they hit him (little kids, so no real damage I guess).
Another guy they were bothering physically and he threatened to kick them.
A non-foreign woman walked by them and they bothered her. She was already upset about something else (we saw her earlier crying and yelling at somebody) and she yelled at them and charged at them to threaten them. When she walked away they followed/chased after her in a rather threatening manner.

Later, a tourism cop (yes, that’s a real thing here) came by and chased them off.

sensualidiot asked: What kind of trouble are you getting into in Illinois?

oh.. you know. guns, drugs, gold, sex.. the usual.
but mostly just hanging out with friends and family before I go. It’s so green and nice here. I walked around in the grass barefoot and it felt like walking on a bunch of human hair.
Went to my old high school, ate at a few local places, went to my old Aikido class..
Gonna try to go to the state fair.

Also! Lots of planning and STILL getting ready for my trip. I need to get photos for visas, cancel my cell phone plan, setup another bank account, find my first few couches to surf/hostels to stay, continue meeting people in the Philippines and New Zealand.
